Materials curation OXYGEN by MaterialDriven

The breathable air we enjoy today originated from tiny oxygen-producing organisms billions of years ago. Oxygen is colourless, odourless, tasteless and yet is essential to life on earth. Air is made up of a mixture of several gases present in the atmosphere and oxygen is termed as one of its essential components. Ideally, the air in the atmosphere contains the proper amount of oxygen for safe breathing. But at times, the level of oxygen can drop due to other toxic gases reacting with it, causing an imbalance that is harmful to all ecosystems on the planet.

Apart from the rainforests, the majority of oxygen production is from oceanic plankton — drifting plants, algae, and some bacteria that can photosynthesize. Sadly, long-term evidence shows that oxygen concentrations is rapidly decreasing in response to surface warming.

Further to this, global warming caused by toxic, manufactured chemicals being pumped into the atmosphere, is also accelerating the depletion of the ozone layer made up of oxygen molecules, that protects us.

This year, in the context of an increasingly volatile world, where we have become wary of the infections carried in the air we breathe -so essential for life- protecting the oxygen we need has become a matter of priority, as well as ensuring a continuing flow of new oxygen from our oceans and ecosystems, and the development of green chemistry that works with nature to preserve our delicate ecosystem and not against it.

MaterialDriven’s curated display will explore the key role that design is playing to support our society, protecting us from contaminated air, as well as actively purifying and regenerating it. As visitors immerse themselves in the exhibition, they will delve into innovative solutions that are available to designers and architects, which will help them secure our future and make a positive impact on the world.

From materials that work to produce better, cleaner air promoting human health and wellbeing, to those that safeguard us from polluted environments, to innovative solutions that questions traditional manufacturing processes, visitors will discover healthy alternatives such as plant-based plastics and leathers that sequester carbon, new and biobased masonry formats, naturally performing materials, non-toxic bacterial colour solutions, as well as pollution-based and pollution-absolving materials.
