The art of light and art
Cultural venues often lead the charge in terms of high-end design, with huge technical challenges brought about by the requirements for sensitive and beautiful works of art. Visitors to galleries and museums expect inspiring spaces and these buildings often go on to win a raft of design awards. An informed panel of speakers will discuss their projects and the complex issues they face, both in the UK and abroad.

Anne Fehrenbach, Associate, Stanton Williams
Anne joined Stanton Williams in 2006, working on the relocation of the University of the Arts’ Central St Martins College to King’s Cross, the new London Underground and Crossrail entrances and Plaza on Tottenham Court Road and the design of Eton Manor for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. She is the associate responsible for the completed Musée d’Art de Nantes, a comprehensive renovation of the Beaux Art museum and new extension for the display of contemporary art. She is currently working on the Museum of London at West Smithfield a comprehensive transformation of the existing market buildings.
Anne studied at Paris La Seine and Paris La Villette before joining Foster and Partners where she worked for 10 years and became an Associate. She worked on several high profile projects at Foster and Partners including as Project Architect for the West London Academy in London and the Millau Viaduct in France. She also worked on the Faculty Building for Imperial College and the Library of the London School of Economics.
Alice Dietsch, Director, AL_A
Alice Dietsch was made a director of AL_A in 2012 having joined the office in 2006. She led the much anticipated V&A Exhibition Road project, since it was won through an international competition, to design the new entrance, gallery and courtyard for the Museum. She is also leading the recent commission for the remodelling of Galeries Lafayette Haussmann in Paris as well as being project director for AL_A’s projects in Thailand, including the Central Embassy Bangkok, a 1.5 million square foot scheme merging a 7-storey luxury shopping mall with a 30-storey, 6-star hotel tower into a cohesive and sinuously twisting shape.
Alice coordinates the competition group in the office and is fluent in developing innovative concepts within budgetary and technical constraints. Her working methods are driven by extensive research, experimentation and intellectual challenge. She moved to the UK after studying and working in Paris and Stockholm.
John McElgunn, Partner, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners
John has worked at RSHP for over a decade, and was made a Partner in 2016. He has a client-facing role and is involved in expediting the company’s expressions of interest and bids for new work. John has led a large team through all stages of working on the British Museum World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre (WCEC). Following a controversial planning process, extensive detailed design and the complex tendering procedures of the OJEU process, the building was completed in 2014 and was on the 2017 shortlist for the RIBA’s Stirling Prize.
Arfon Davies, Director, Lighting, Arup
Arfon is lighting designer and Director, and a founding member of the lighting practice at Arup. He leads the London lighting studio with a team of 20 designers and is an acknowledged expert in museum and gallery lighting, with particular expertise in daylight design. This expertise has shaped many important and award winning projects, including the Piano Pavillion at the Kimbell Art Museum, the Modern Wing at the Art Institute of Chicago, and the recently completed Centro Botin in Santander. He is currently leading the lighting design for a major new museum and performing art space in Moscow for the V-A-C Foundation, as well as exhibition lighting design projects at the British Museum, the V&A, and the Science Museum in London. He contributes extensively to the lighting industry and the formulation of lighting standards and guidance, recently co-authoring the UK guide to lighting of museums and the British Standard for daylighting.
