Carnegie School of Sport transformed by tiles

29 April 2021

Architects Sheppard Robson recently designed the Carnegie School of Sport in Leeds with a contemporary look and feel including a robust flooring finish from Mosa, befitting one of the largest providers of sport in UK higher education.

Architects Sheppard Robson have designed a new facility for Leeds Beckett University at the higher education provider’s Headingley Campus, which is home to students and academic staff from the Carnegie School of Sport. This groundbreaking project features large format floor tiles, which were chosen to provide a balanced scale to the space.

The £45 million project is a home for undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers, as well as providing a hub for elite athletes. Standout features include a 60m covered rooftop running track and an environmental chamber which is able to mimic different altitudes and environments.

The use of materials was key in blending this contemporary addition to the existing historic buildings. The aluminium panels used in the Carnegie School of Sport reflect the Doric columns, providing an interplay of light, while the 60m running track is encased in red anodised aluminium featuring the pattern of a section of muscle - symbolic of the physical exertion that takes place here. There are also two blocks running perpendicular to the running track plus a central atrium with double-height glazing to provide spectacular views to the outdoor facilities and also brings the outside inside.

Architect Simon Davies explains, “We wanted to specify a flooring finish that was contemporary, robust, formal and of a high visual quality that matched the aspiration for the look and feel of building.” Sustainability played its part in specification too. With the understanding that the building’s internal environment would be subject to evolution during its lifespan, Core Collection Solids floor tiles are Cradle to Cradle Silver certified, as is nearly 99% of Mosa’s product range.

The creation of these new state-of-the-art facilities will, it is hoped, help Leeds Beckett University continue to attract the best students and staff and contribute to the city’s economic and social development.
